Lectures for the general public interested in science ---
The Society organises lectures aimed at the general public with an interest in the physical sciences.
The speakers are authorities in their subjects with national/international reputations but are good communicators. The lectures are on varied topics and include recent research developments, both theoretical and in practical applications of science.

Joint lecture with IET Solent Young Professionals Alison Walker University of Bath IET UK - South: Solent local network lecture: Photonic Engineering for Quantum Technology
Dr James Gates, Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton
Quantum technology (QT) is a new area of research and innovation in which quantum physics is harnessed to produce systems
with performance which is otherwise unachievable with classical physics. These areas include quantum metrology and sensing,
secure communication and quantum computing.
A common underlying technology is optics and photonics, however the requirements for these devices are extremely challenging.
This talk will give a brief overview of quantum technologies and what they promise to achieve. This will include details about
the NQIT QT hub, the largest EPSRC funded project to date, followed by a discussion of the unique engineering challenges
and finally the routes to address them.
